Description
UK CAPTIVE BRED BABY SPUR-THIGHED TORTOISE (MIRCOCHIPPED) 2024
Spur-thighed tortoises are a type of Mediterranean tortoise. They can be kept in a tortoise table or vivarium and can live outside in summer months.
Tortoises are cold blooded reptiles that need heat to function. Spur-thighed require a basking hotspot temperature of 85F-90F during the day. At night time the temperature should between 65F-70F. They come from hot and dry areas where the air humidity is low.
They also require Ultra Violet lighting (UVA and UVB) for at least 12 hours a day, this stimulates appetite, activity and promotes vitamin D3 synthesis which tortoises need to absorb calcium and for healthy growth.
A multi-vitamin supplement must be added to their daily diet (Reptavite/Calcium Powder). A good mixture of plants, vegetables and our Komodo complete pellet food will ensure your tortoise has a balanced diet. Fresh food should be given everyday. Visit our tortoise diet page to find out the best foods for your tortoise.
Tortoises drink very little water. They should be bathed in a shallow dish of fresh warm water at least once a week. This helps them release their motions and uric acid. Fresh water should be given everyday.
We have found that hemp bedding the best substrate to use as it is dust free and easy to clean. Droppings can be picked out daily and cleaned out fully every 3 weeks or when necessary.
Spur-thighed tortoises can hibernate although we do not recommend it for the first 3 years or if they are not the correct size and weight. For more information go to our hibernation page.
We have complete starter kits that include everything you need to care for your Spur-thighed tortoise.

I received a breathtaking specimen in a warm and cosy box with charming instructions for a nice warm bath. S/he is a bit shy so far but clearly eating and defecating. Highly reccomend these guys.

To say we’re absolutely delighted with, not only our new tortoise, but also with the exemplary service we’ve received from Wilton Pets and, in particular Jack, is an understatement. Our little Spur was a birthday present for our son and when the table we ordered was delayed by the supplier, these guys bent over backwards to ensure that our little boy got his present on time. They let us take their own table until ours arrived and I don’t know many places that would go out of their way to do that – it was greatly appreciated. They also decorated the outside of the box our tortoise was taken home in, with birthday wishes which was a lovely touch. We can’t recommend Wilton Pets highly enough and we’ll definitely be back again. Thank you guys!

I had my little one delivered today. I have to say, I’m very impressed. My beautiful tortoise was packed very well and managed to stay very warm till he arrived. I loved the message on the box ”Happy New Year, Warm Bath Please”! He looks very healthy. You can see these guys really take great care of their tortoises. Even though I read that tortoises generally do not like to be stroked and made every effort to be as calm as possible so that he could recover from the stress of being moved, he didn’t look that taken aback by the new faces around him and didn’t mind being (occasionally and very gently) handled. Thank you ever so much!
